Proyectos de la aldea San Mateo Milpas Altas

San Mateo Milpas Altas is a village in the local government of La Antigua Guatemala and is located 15 minutes by bus.
 The village has 1,765 inhabitants; 875 are men and 890 are women. Their economy is mainly agricultural: corn, beans, flowers; and handcrafts. The only touristy site is the Catholic Church which dates from the century 16th.

The purpose of San Mateo Milpas Altas is to assist and benefit the people of the town.

The God’s Child Project was founded in 1991 by Patrick Atkinson Barth with very simple aims: to pull vulnerable kids out of the street, send them to school, help to recover their health, and give them their dreams and a positive attitude towards life (to survive).
The God’s Child Project is located in Antigua Guatemala, and is a development center which is highly valued by the community.

The association works with children and adults, all of whom are from very poor families. The majority of the children only have one parent, who works hard, and some of the children are parentless.

Proyectos de la aldea San Bartolomé Becerra

San Bartolomé Becerra was founded at the end of the XVIII century by the gentleman Don Bartolomé Becerra. It is located one kilometer southwest of Antigua, Guatemala. It has a population of 5,085, and inhabitants enjoy a mild climate throughout the year.

The village includes a complete primary public school, which works with about 350 poor children, who ages range from 6 to 12 years old. Furthermore they have urban buses, and within the village’s territory there are coffee plantations including Las Fincas, Las Margaritas, and Finca Retana. Their economic activities include agriculture (coffee, corn, beans, vegetables, fruit, flowers), as well as artisans and jewelers.

Guatemala has a population of approximately 13 million, of which 100,000 could be infected with HIV virus. Ten Guatemalans die every day from AIDS.

In 1962, Father Francis O’Leary founded Hospice International in Pakistan for the sick and terminally ill. In 1989, he started the same type of organization in Guatemala; which was originally located in Guatemala City for six years, then moved to San Lucas Sacatepéquez, and which is now located in Santa Lucia Milpas Altas Sacatepéquez (since November 2006).

Since its beginning, the philosophy of the Hospice Association is to provide love and care to people who are facing their last days of life. They also receive medicine, food and clothing, which are provided for free, as well as spiritual and psychological support.
