The AWARE shelter was founded in 2000 by Xenii Nielsen. It is a non-profit and non-governmental charitable organization which was registered in 1998.

The shelter is located in the highland forests of Guatemala, at an altitude of about 2300 meters (7500 feet) and is located 45 minutes by bus from Antigua. It is situated in a village called Pachaj, (15 minutes walk from the village) and Sumpango, which has Internet facilities, a market, and a bank.

AWARE dedicates itself to providing shelter to domestic animals from the street. All animals that are not adopted remain at the shelter and are well taken care of.
