On November 1st, students and staff of La Unión participated in the Giant Kite Festival of Sumpango, Sacatepéquez.
Kites (which are called BARRILETES in Guatemala) have a very special meaning for many Guatemalans, especially the indigenous. Kites and Giant kites are used to help guide the dead ones back to their love ones and to the cemeteries where they are remembered. Giant kites are flown over the cemeteries of Sumpango and Santiago Sacatepéquez. These kits are built and flown for November 1st which is the Day of the Deads or All Saints day. Guatemalan families normally gather in the cemeteries to spend all day with their loved ones.
The giant kites take 6 to 8 months to build and are made of cane and China paper. Some of them can mid up to 6 meters of diameter.
