Proyecto Las Flores

The project is part of the Unidad Técnica Administrativa Sacatepéquez (Technical Administrative Unity of Sacatepéquez) and was founded in 1991 by a group of parents in the community (with little means); as well as the projects “Corazón de los Niños” and “Kubin Junan”. “Proyecto” Las Flores is located in San Miguel Dueñas which is located 20 minutes from Antigua by bus.

The purpose and goal of the project is to promote the improvement and well being of youth through educational programs, nutrition, health, as well as through family promotion and recreation. Furthermore, the project promotes family development in the community through educational programs, classes and support.

The “Proyecto” Las Flores is a school (which is recognized by the Guatemalan government), as well as a medical, dental, mental clinic; pharmacy, laboratory service (which is located in “Corazón de los Niños”), “Escuela para Padres” (School for Parents; as many do not know how to read and write), and also includes programs and meetings to discuss hygiene, self-esteem, pregnancy, etc. Furthermore, the project provides courses on cooking, baking, handcrafts, etc. which are given by college interns who study home economics; a program for teenagers in which they talk about sexuality, respect for their parents, self-esteem, etc. Additionally, they work to empower young women by encouraging them to participate in classes and programs which will allow for them to become role models in their communities and later teach other women parenting skills. Furthermore, micro-loans are offered to help start businesses.

Presently, there are 500 children who are affiliated with the project. Family members are also allowed to use all services of the project. Currently, the school has 40 children from the ages of 3-6 years old.

As a volunteer, you can help as an auxiliary teacher; assist children with class work, and play with the children during the break. If you are a doctor, nurse, dentist or psychologist you can support the appropriate clinic. It is also possible to work with the project for one day or more. The schedule is from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and from 2-5 p.m., but you choose what works best for you. An advanced beginner Spanish level is sufficient to volunteer with this project.
