Hogar de Ancianos Fray Rodrigo de la Cruz

The project was founded in 1965 by the Guatemalan Government and is located in Antigua. The nursing home belongs to the “Red de Servicios Hospitalarios del Ministerio de Salud Pública”.

The purpose of the Nursing Home Fray Rodrigo de la Cruz is to offer comprehensive care to senior citizens. Many of these seniors have neither a family nor a place to live, so they remain in the institution forever. The project serves the elderly indiscriminately without distinction of race or religion. Currently, they serve 135 senior citizens.

As a volunteer, you can help in the following areas: PHYSICAL THERAPY (accompanying and looking after seniors during their exercises, transferring patients, or helping them move to different areas for activities, etc. – it is possible to work mornings or the entire day), NUTRITION (feeding the seniors who are disabled), HYGIENE (helping to bath and care for male and female patients, personal hygiene, etc.), INFIRMARY/WARD (transferring the seniors into and out of wheel chairs), RECREATION (taking the elderly to the park, church or cinema), and OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY (there are different activities).

Between 2 and 10 people help the elderly depending on the area. It is possible to work between 7 a.m.-4.30 p.m., depending on the schedule you choose.

Volunteers are encouraged to work for a minimum of at least one week. It is necessary that you register yourself with the project before you start working. In addition, they request that the volunteers arrive on time and abide by the rules of the nursing home. For this work you need a high-intermediate Spanish level. If you love to spend time with elderly people, you are welcome at this nursing home!
