Hogar de Ancianos Cabecitas de Algodón
The Nursing Home Cabecitas de Algodón was founded on December 16th, 2002 in Guatemala City by Dr. Juan de Dios Aceituno. After it was established, the organization was moved to a more pleasant area in Antigua Guatemala, close to the market and the bus terminal.
The foundation expanded their services, due to need, and opened a second foundation in April 2006. Nursing Home Cabecitas de Algodón II, which is located in San Pedro El Panorama located 5 minutes from Antigua.
The purpose of this nursing home is to provide for the well-being of the elderly, abandoned by their family, and provide food, medical attention, clothing, and to provide for all of their other needs. The nursing home’s credence is that all elderly merit a roof, food and the essential dignity and respect they deserve.
Presently, the Nursing Home Cabecitas de Algodón accommodates 52 senior citizens coming from national hospitals and from the Red Cross, many who suffer from terminal illnesses. Furthermore, the nursing home provides three meals a day to more than 250 indigenous people, street children, single-mothers and the poor.
Volunteers can assist with the care of the elderly by helping to feed, bath, change diapers, as well as spend time speaking and visiting with the senior citizens. Furthermore, volunteers can help with the cleaning in the kitchen, such as washing dishes, cutting vegetables, and serving food. Volunteers can choose to work half-days or full days. Note: Volunteers working with senior citizens must speak Spanish at an intermediate level or higher.
While warm-hearted volunteers are essential to the program, the nursing home is still in need of funding and donations. Food, medicine, money, etc. for the nursing home are always welcome and greatly appreciated.
