Escuela Vuelta Grande
Vuelta Grande is a community located approximately 25 minutes from Antigua Guatemala. It has a population of 1,200 people, all of whom are indigenous. The people of Vuelta Grande live on the crops they are able to cultivate, and from the sales of their products at the market in Antigua Guatemala. Furthermore, they do not have access to public transportation and have limited electricity and water.
The purpose and goal of Escuela Vuelta Grande is to provide primary education to all children. Currently, there are about 150 children at the school (ages 4 to 15 years old) all of whom live in extreme poverty.
Centro Lingüístico “La Unión” has assisted and supported the project for the past two years in repairing, painting, supporting the school, and assisting with other needed services. A health center, boys and girls bathrooms, and a stadium have been built, which have been an additional benefit to the students. With the help of individual volunteers and volunteer groups from many countries, the project has been able to make a huge difference in the lives of children.
“La Unión” works with a large number of international organizations to support Escuela Vuelta Grande by providing education to children whose families cannot afford proper education.
The project is in need of stable teachers, classroom furniture, painting, and other repairs so that the children can study. Additionally, uneven land around the school needs to be flattened to make room for more activities for the children. Donations of study materials are also needed since some classrooms do not have sufficient supplies. As a volunteer, you can help to paint, assist in repairs of the school, plan or teach classes. To volunteer, you must have an intermediate Spanish level.
Donations of school supplies, sporting goods (to use in the stadium…such as balls, bats, gloves, etc.), electrical material (some classes do not have electricity), etc. are welcome.
Additionally, shoes, clothes or food would help put smiles on the children’s faces. Escuela Vuelta Grande will be happy to receive your help.
