Centro de Rehabilitación Cristiana Talíta Cumi
This center has been in existence for many years, but it was not officially opened until February 10, 2006 by Jorge Armando Rosales who is the president and representative of the organization. The center maintains itself only through donations and its honorary personnel. The center is situated close to the mountains of Jocotenango, which is located 15 minutes by bus from Antigua and another 10 minutes on foot.
Talíta Cumi is Greek and signifies “Get up Youngster.” The purpose of the center is to assist men with alcohol and drug problems to recuperate and recover from their addictions.
The center has room for 60 people. Generally, there are between 35 and 50 occupants who remain for at least a month, some stay for up to 2 months. To enter the center, there is no fixed fee; the families pay what they can afford in the form of a donation. The occupants get up early, prepare their food, and clean everything. So that the occupants also have some relaxation time, there is a schedule for watching television, using the computer, and also daily visits from family and friends.
The volunteer can teach manual work skills (previous knowledge necessary) to the occupants, teach English or computer skills, work as an assistant physical education teacher, or lead psychological or religious discussions (about alcoholism). If you would like to work with the occupants in a specific area, please contact us so we can clarify it. Volunteers are welcome on their first day, and can work in the morning and/or afternoons. In order to volunteer at the center, volunteers need to speak Spanish at an intermediate level.
You can donate food, snacks, medicine (oral or injected serum, B-complex vitamins, Tabcin, Panadol, 3cc syringes, etc.), personal hygiene items (soap or personal clothing items, etc.), school/office supplies (pens, etc.) or money. The Christian Rehabilitation Center Talíta Cumi will appreciate it.
