Camino a la Excelencia

This project was founded at the beginning of 2005 by the Municipality of Jocotenango’s Department of Social Work (Departamento de Obras Sociales de la Municipalidad de Jocotenango (DOSMJ)). But it was not until February 14, 2006 that the offices were opened with the participation of the Mayor Francisco Javier Fuentes, as well as members from the municipal council. Camino a la Excelencia is located in the Jocotenango Municipal Building, which is located 10 minutes by bus from Antigua.

The purpose and goal of the project is to support and assist children of poor families with their public school education by providing necessary school supplies and support. The project also works toward improving student’s lives, self-esteem, home environment, and family relationships, with the goal of assisting and supporting children to excel in their studies in order to become successful professionals. Additionally, every month students are given a bag of food for their families.

Currently, there are about 40 children from four local public schools affiliated with the program. The youth, who are good students, face many obstacles and economic limitations. After classes in the afternoon, children are supervised through various activities (basic English classes, handicrafts, and help with their homework).

Every month the project rewards the children with activities or excursions to motivate their efforts. Through these activities or trips, the children get to know their environment, have a good time and get the opportunity to experience different places and activities. They also help the children to open their minds and to contribute to the preservation of their natural environment.

Volunteers can be assistant teachers, teaching general studies or physical education classes. English teachers are needed for the complete school year (January through December) or they can help in counseling (only volunteers with experience). The project asks that volunteers participate at least one week. The schedule is from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. and from 2-6 p.m. There is no problem if a volunteer wants to study Spanish; he/she can work in the afternoon as there are more activities and more volunteers are needed at that time. To work as an assistant teacher, a beginner Spanish level is sufficient. For other work, a more fluent Spanish level is necessary.

If you would like to donate materials for educational games (table games, ropes, balls, etc.), food or supplies like chairs, mops, garbage cans, toilet paper, etc. Camino a la Excelencia would be happy to receive your help.
