Asociación Obras Sociales del “Hermano Pedro”

This project was founded on June 21st, 1980 by Fray Guillermo Bonilla Carvajal and a group of teenagers called Tenerife. It is situated in Antigua, close to the school “La Unión”.

The goal of the project is to provide high quality attention with love and charity to the poor population; there are both permanent and temporary patients needing preventive and specialized services. In addition, they offer hospice, food and clothing, integral, moral and spiritual education in coordination with volunteers and national and foreign entities. The project provides a home and assists children with chronic malnutrition and physical disabilities. Teenagers and adults with physical and mental disabilities are also served as well. Furthermore, they provide free eye surgery (cataracts, strabismus and glaucoma).

As a volunteer, you can attend directly to the needs of the patients of different origin and age who stay in the hospital by creating a stable environment for them. The majority of patients suffers from physical and mental disability and desperately need attention. The hospital encourages the volunteers to participate in the activities with the patients like: drawing, painting, playing, and singing. You can choose to work with men, women, adolescents, little children or babies. The volunteers form a very valuable group in the hospital and are essential for the survival of the project.

To work for Asociación Obras Sociales del Hermano Pedro, it is necessary to stay at least one week and speak Spanish at an advanced-beginner level. Please contact us for more information.

If you wish you can donate the following articles which are needed: a variety of cleaning products, personal hygiene products, diapers, feeding bottles, clothing (for babies, children, teenagers, adults), shoes, stimulation/learning toys, medicine, school materials (notebooks, books, pencils, pens, crayons, painting books, highlighters, water colors, colored paper, balloons, children’s music CDs, movies for kids, (etc.)).
